As posted last weekend (with interview video of Achiuwa), Erie Community College forward God's Gift Achiuwa is scheduled to visit the St. John's Red Storm's Queens campus this weekend. He's a coveted recruit - a strong-looking rebounder who will be looked to bang in the paint for the mostly-freshman Red Storm. And he's religious, possibly Catholic, making St. John's a possibly good spot for him. He'll come to a Division I college with 2 years of eligibility remaining.
But being a young man with a name meant for headlines, Adam Zagoria gets to lead with "God will visit St. John’s on Easter weekend." Nice one!
The Red Storm Rivals site gets an interview with God's Gift Achiuwa ($ req'd) in anticipation for the forward's visit. Achiuwa states that he doesn't want to favor one school over another to indicate where he is leaning. Achiuwa is also quoted as saying that he sees himself as "more of a three" - in other words, a wing player or small forward...
Like many of the Red Storm's other incoming recruits and one returning starter.
It can work - Justin Brownlee is probably "more of a three" but played as a de facto center for the Red Storm as they surged. But for the skinny and young Red Storm, one would prefer to bring in a recruit who is interested in crushing fools down low, not in dribbling and outside shooting. Ah, but that's a throwaway line from the interview; Steve Lavin and the Red Storm staff will find a way to use Achiuwa to the benefit of the team.
