A few years ago, back in the Norm Roberts days, Rick Pitino was being interviewed and was asked about St. John's. He said that the program was being rebuilt the right way and all it needed was one home grown star to stay home and play in the City and St. John's fans would get their program back. Two years ago, only a few months after taking the job, Steve Lavin announced that
Moe Harkless of Queens decided to join the Johnnies and play for his hometown college team. Lavin said Harkless was an important get not simply due to his skills, but that he would be the "Pied Piper" that would lead other top recruits to St. John's. While Lavin has done an unbelievable job in taking DJ, Paris, Dwight and the gang to the top of the Big East, getting two outstanding recruiting classes, and putting St. John's on all the sports pages and ESPN for all the right reasons, Moe Harkless has now become embedded in the story of St. John's return. Thanks Moe - for choosing to stay home, for staying with the Johnnies through the year even though you never got a real chance to play for the coach who brought you here, for always playing tough and being a class guy, and for returning the St. John's logo to the NBA. We waited a long time for you to arrive and you did not disappoint. Will be rooting for you and hope you have a great career in the NBA!
