St. John's men's and women's soccer team win in doubleheader at Belson

QUEENS, N.Y. - The St. John's men's soccer team showed why they were preseason Big East favorites Friday night against Boston University in front of a crowd of 1,082 people at Belson Stadium.

In less then five minutes after kick-off, red-shirted junior Nick Matthews scored the opening goal of the 2012-13 season, heading in a rebounded shot which was initially taken by freshman Sean Sepe.

St. John's would double their lead right before halftime, in the 41', after senior Andres Vargas, who subbed into the game for red-shirted sophomore Daniel Herrera in the 33', pick up the ball in Red Storm territory and kicked it into a second gear, tearing down the pitch on a breakaway and beating BU's keeper, Nick Thompson, for the goal.

Two minutes into the start of the second half, the senior from England, Jack Bennett, stepped up to take a penalty kick for the Red Storm and finished it off to give the team a 3-0 lead, which would be the end result.

Rafael Diaz made 3 saves and Sepe added an assist for St. John's.

The St. John's women's team (2-1-0) also won their game, as part of the doubleheader with the men's team. The women won a double overtime thriller which saw freshman Emily Cubbage score the game winner in the 113' to give the team a 2-1 victory over Air Force.

The Lady Red Storm were coming off a brutal 5-0 loss to Penn State and looked to get back on track. Red-shirted senior, Runa Stefansdottir gave the team a 1-0 lead that wouldn't be given up until the 88'.

Ellen Conway earned her first collegiate win in her first start for St. John's.

Both the men and women's team will be back in action on Sunday the 26th as the men will face Colgate at 8 p.m. and the women will face Stony Brook at 1 p.m.
