The View From Section 110 - Villanova

I waited a few hours before posting this to see if a little time would temper my view from 110 today. It didn't. The view from 110 was of a team that just isn't getting it. Look, this was a winnable game. A highly winnable game. Villanova is a good team. But they are not Syracuse, they are not Wisconsin and ultimately may not be Creighton. We should have won this game. The referees were horrendous, but there were some dumb fouls as well that were properly called. When the game is close, this team doesn't know how to close it out. For example, in the last five minutes there was a sequence where Nova turns the ball over and the Johnnies have a fast break. D'Angello is running up the middle of the court ahead of two wildcats and Greene is ahead of him but on the left side. Instead of the pass going to Harrison who is heading to the basket, the pass goes to Greene, who gets it, starts to cut in and then stops and shoots a jumper with two Nova players in front of him. That is bad basketball. Here are the facts. This team was expected to contend for a Big East title and finish at least in the top four. That is not happening. At this point, it looks like they need to be in the top four to get an NCAA bid. I have a feeling we are looking at the NIT. Can things turn around? You bet. But they have shown no signs at all that they have improved from last season or that they have gelled in any way during the course of the last two months. It's a bad view from 110.
