11-8...11-8...why do those numbers sound so familiar? Oh right, that not only is our current record, but it is also the record we had after the first 19 games of the 2010 - 2011 season. But not all 11-8 records are the same. While the 11-8 of three seasons ago offers us some hope, there are differences that make our current situation a bit more precarious. One thing that is a positive, we do not currently have the type of bad losses we had in 2010-2011. That season, we lost the back to back games against Fordham and St. Bonaventure - and the Bonnie loss was at home. This season we do not have the out of conference bad loss except for Penn State. The problem though is we do not have the big win that we had a few of three years ago. The biggest win for us this season might be our most recent one - Seton Hall. Eh. We lost to three top ten teams so far this season, although we did play Cuse and Nova close. The 11-8 of three years ago had some notable wins. We had the Great Alaska Shootout Championship. Not an amazing field but three wins including the final against Arizona State. We won the last Holiday Festival Championship at the Garden beating what was at the time an undefeated Northwestern. Also in that 11-8 were road wins against West Virginia and Providence to open Big East play and a Garden win over #13 Georgetown. We also got pummeled by G'Town, Cuse, ND and Louisville during that period. We were 4-5 in conference play. So while the record itself was not eye catching, there were some shiny little gems that offered a bit of hope. Game 19 of 2010-2011 was a crushing loss at Georgetown. The next game on the schedule was Duke at the Garden. I remember walking into the game and saying to my son and his friend that this could either go very well or horribly bad. It went very, very well and served as a catalyst for the Johnnies to make their move and start knocking off top 25 teams down the line. This season, we are 1-5 in the Big East with a tough trip to Hinkle and Omaha on deck. The number of likely top 25 games we will play going forward will be somewhere around 3-4 (figuring Nova and Creighton stay ranked and maybe Xavier sneaks in). So we are not going to have the opportunity to get the number of signature victories that helped in 2010-2011. But if, and this is a big if, the Johnnies can make a run and knock off some of the top teams they have on the schedule, and take care of business against the lower half of the league, we may catch a break somewhere. Maybe we set ourselves up for a tournament run at the Garden. 11-8. Game 20 tomorrow.
