As "walktoschool" commented on the Fanpost section, I too have supported SJU since the Sonny Dove, Tony Jackson, Leroy Ellis, Lapchick/Cannesecca era. I cheered them through the Marc Jackson, Mullen, Berry years. I even supported them through the Jarvis, Norm Roberts eras.
To be fair, Lavin made the NCAA with Roberts' team, and the significant addition of Hardy; however, at this point, the question must be, "now what?" The current team has retrogressed, probably will not make the NCAA, and might not make the NIT.
In my opinion, the poster child for this team's retrogression is Obekpa. He is a talented athlete, who shows a desire to score. The SJU brain trust should have taught him a turn around jumper, and a sky hook shot. College coaches are teachers; if they neglected Obekpa in this way, they have failed, and they have limited him. They have relegated him to being a one dimensional player: he is only a shot blocker, and he is not an offensive threat.
Lavin's reputation is that he is a terrific recruiter. With this team's retrogression, will top tier recruits want to come to SJU?
So, now what? Look to next year. Get an Xs and Os bench coach (is Dunlap unemployed?). Look to JUCO, Canada, Europe, for perimeter shooters. In the future, search that hidden gem, somewhere in the heartland of the country, who has not made ESPN's top list, but who can shoot threes, and recruit him.
