A Hole Too Deep

Like so many of their losses this season, the 2013-2014 campaign of the Red Storm began with a hole that was just too deep to climb out of. With a record of 20-12, there is no shot of an NCAA bid this season. The Big East Quarterfinal game against Providence was the season summed up in 40 minutes of play. They come in with expectations, dig themselves a hole, almost find their way out but just miss ground level in the end. It was a problem some saw in the beginning when we played close games against very weak non-conference opposition. It was there against Creighton in Omaha, the Hoyas in D.C., and Penn State in Brooklyn. There was the return of the jumper today. Instead of gunning to the hoop, we settled for jumpers which have always been a weakness. Of course, there is the "highlight reel" play that never works for the Johnnies. The last fast break of todays game where they made two passes under the basket rather than just putting it up is maddening. At the end of the day, this team did show that bounce back nature that Lavin loves. To go 11-4 over the last 15 games is not something any of us thought could happen - at least not this fan (Remember Fanpost "Done"?). But in the end, there was just too much ground to make up, and too many other hungry teams looking to make noise in the new Big East. So on to the NIT. It would be great to win it all and have a final win at the Garden to erase the bad taste of today. This is a group that deserves to win, maybe we make one more run before this season is finally "done".
