The 2013-14 Schedule...Piece by Piece

Well, here is what we know so far. We know we get two games each against Georgetown, Villanova, Seton Hall, Marquette, DePaul, Providence, Creighton, Butler and Xavier. We add to that Syracuse and Bucknell at home. Wisconsin on the road. Columbia at Barclays and one of or some combination of Georgia Tech, Penn State and Ole Miss also at Barclays. So we have a minimum of 23 games right now with about seven to fill. We will have a local team at MSG for the holiday festival more than likely and with six to go I think we have a pretty good schedule here. Should be no RPI issues. Anyone hearing about any other games out there?

What Games at The Garden for 2013-14?

What games do you all see for the Johnnies at the Garden next season. We know we will have Nova, G'Town and Syracuse plus a Holiday Festival game. We need about four more from the following group: Quette, Hall, Providence, Butler, Xavier, Creighton, DePaul. I would think Marquette and Seton Hall. Hopefully we grab another non-conference game for the Garden for February and maybe even a third big non-con for a road game so we get a return in 2014-15. If not who are the other two? Xavier and Butler maybe?

University of Florida Gulf Coast?

Could anyone ever have anticipated that our win against University of Florida Gulf Coast would be our biggest win of the year? ;-) Some of us may remember all the dunks that they threw our way at Carnesecca. At the time, we may have thought that it was our youth and inexperience, but it certainly wasn't. A lot of people think that they're going to be pasted by the Gators; I'm not one of them. So here's to UFGC for making our season!

The View from Section 110 vs. Pitt

Section 110 at the Garden was pumped for a Johnnies upset but the first sign of trouble was the gray uniforms. Look, I like new looks here and there but our record out of the Reds and Whites is not very good. The Johnnies were nicely composed in the first half cutting through a Pitt lead to go into the half down three. The thinking in 110 was if we were within five at the half, we would be in good shape for a second half run. Wrong. Second half was a disaster. At the 10:32 mark in the second half, Pitt had nine fouls and the Johnnies had 2. Good indication of things to come since the Johnnies were hitting free throws. PITT DID NOT COMMIT ANOTHER FOUL THE REST OF THE GAME -at least according to the men in stripes. It was a bruital second half. D'Angello was not simply missiung shots, he was airballing jumpers. Would have been great to grab the win, but now Providence becomes a must, must win (it probably was already). A group of Section 110 memebers will be at the Dunk on Saturday night to hopefully watch a road win.

So what do we need?

I think we need to get to 19 wins for an invite. Either three of our remaining five plus a BET win or four of last five. If we go four of the next five that would mean we beat two more ranked teams at least. The only way 18 might get us in is if we beat Pitt, Quette, and ND. But even with that, I don't think 18 wins does the trick. Any thoughts?

The View From Section 110 vs. Seton Hall

It looked like a decent crowd for a Sunday noon tip - seemed like more than the 7,000+ listed in the box score. The beginning was just a shot fest. Both sides just running their offenses and getting to the basket. I liked how the Johnnies came back at the end of the first to take the lead and then extend it into the second half. The problem is they get very sloppy for stretches of time when they have a lead. They rush the ball, poor shot selection, etc. I am sure it is youth, but they have to learn how to control both the tempo and the game when then have a sizable lead. I think it was key that they never gave up the lead - even when it shrank to 1. We were helped greatly by the fact that the Pirates' shots stopped falling in the last ten minutes. They were getting stops on defense but not converting. Sampson quieted down a bit in the second, but when D'Angello is on - he is really on. He had the look early on that he was feeling good and was consistented pretty much through the game. The refs were absolutely horrendous. But a win is a win. We need to take the next one because we have a tough four game stretch after that.

Looks Like Syracuse Game will Continue

In the post game presser last night, Lavs spoke about playing Rutgers non-conference in the future. He said he would like to but has to look at the composite scheduling once the new league is formed. He also said, "I know we are going to play Syracuse". That sounds like a done. If we keep Duke on the schedule, it would be good alternating years at the Garden. I assume Duke will be on the schedule next year and it would be a Garden game, so maybe the series starts up in 2014.

The View From Section 110 vs. Rutgers

Ugly. Sad. Disappointing. This is a game the Johnnies gave away. It was not a fun game to watch as it was a total grind, which is not a game in which our athletic Johnnies look particularly comfortable in. Two seasons ago, Lavin described his offensive plan as trying to get a shot off in the first six seconds of the possesion and then if not running the clock down to get a good look if they can't get anything in that first six. These Johnnies were not executing in that way if that is still the game plan. They were tenative offensively. Their defense was not particularly bad, but they were unable to finish on turnovers, or would wind up giving the ball back. I have watched Branch now in the three games he has played and I am not particularly impressed. He has some nice moves but seems reckless. Dumb turnovers at bad times. Maybe its because he has only played three games, but Garrett should absolutely play over Branch. And I just can't talk about free throws...it hurts too much. We get a Georgetown team that is struggling Saturday morning. Lets hope they don't decide to score more than 50 points.

Duke defeats St.John's in the Maggie Dixon Classic

New York City – They were upset minded but couldn’t pull it off. Duke defeated St. John’s in the Maggie Dixon Classic at Madison Square Garden. The 60-42 triumph put the Blue Devils at an unblemished 8-0. The Storm fell to 4-3.

The efficiency numbers for the Red Storm players in the Duke game. Those logging 10 or more minutes are listed:

EFF = Pts + REB + A + Blk + Stl – (missed FGA + Missed FTA + TO)

Duke defended Smith extremely well limiting her to 8 points. The 6-1 senior did record four blocked shots. McKenith provided the offense as the lone St.John’s’ double figure scorer with a game high 19 points. Her eight turnovers had a marked effect on the efficiency.

The positives. Coach Joe Tartamella praised the St. John’s effort in battling despite looking at a 15 point halftime deficit. The Storm did a better job limiting turnovers the last twenty minutes and I general, played much better over that juncture.

The negative. A few items. McKenith had an outstanding game but little help in the scoring column. Another consistent scorer must emerge, especially in Big East play. The Red Storm was bothered by Duke’s size, especially Elizabeth Williams with 16 points 7 boards, and dug a hole as Duke enjoyed a 17-4 edge in points off turnovers the first half. Attacking the Duke zone was not easy. Getting in the gaps and inside was not easy and many times St. John’s settled for perimeter shots. Again, the Blue Devil size was a contributing factor. Next up: Tennessee Tech on Saturday in holiday classic at Carnesecca Arena.

The View From Section 110 vs. Fordham

First, the Garden looks so good. St. John's well represented in the display that circles the concession concourse noting a Garden event for every day of the year. I don't know if it was opening night jitters or something else, but the Johnnies were flat. D'Angello was absolutely not himself and you could see it was getting to him emotionally. It was almost to where you didn't want to see him shoot because he looked so lost. The second half was a different story. The defense kept us in the game. Our transition game was not good. At one point late in the game we were up five even though Fordham had 20 turn overs and we had 8. With two more non-conference games left, the Johnnies need to learn to come out with the intensity they show in the second half. Big East teams are not going to let them climb back into games. Great night for Obekpa setting the blocking mark at The Worlds Most Famous Arena.

The Orlando Sanchez factor

I'm growing inpatient with the NCAA eligibility review "process".

I just don't understand how a kid that committed in April is still having an eligibility review in December.

Does a higher profile school get a faster decision? UCLA comes to mind.

Are they short-staffed in Indy? Budget cuts hitting hard? What's the deal?!

This is a kid that might have only 1 year of eligibility and the clock is ticking. He gives the Johnnies a presence in the middle that would add a dimension they are sorely in need of. He is a game changer.

The View From Section 3 vs. NJIT

I had my eyes closed during much of the first half so my view wasn't great. The Johnnies were letting The Highlanders in the paint quite a bit in the early going. Jakar Sampson really gives the Johnnies a potent option to compliment D'Angello. He has a great jumper and is confident to take it. The most horrendous showing was at the free throw line. We could have won this game by twenty if we just could have hit some free throws. But hey - a win is a win. This easily could have been one of those Lavin head scratcher losses but thankfully it wasn't.

The View From Section 3 vs. South Carolina

Other than the horrific injury to the South Carlina player, the view from Section 3 tonight was very, very good. The Johnnies played a complete game tonight from begining to end. When the Gamecocks cut the lead to single digits in the second half, the Johnnies composed themselves and dropped the hammer big time. Frank Martin looked like his head was going to explode as he mostly sat in stunned silence while his assistants tried to get through to the SC players. After a somewhat quiet outing against FGCU, Garrett returned to his normal self and was everywhere you wanted him to be. (Doesn't he remind you of Paris Horne a bit?) All in all a great game. Johnnies did their part for the Big East tonight and the crowd at CA was fantastic.
