New Orleans bred and Maryland (Progressive Christian) schooled Donald Williams will be a Kentucky Wildcat. I was actually going to post this week, wondering where he had gotten off to.
Will this be a case of one basketball player who got away from the Red Storm staff? Here's what we know of the player:
- he's somewhere between 6'4" and 6'7".
- the Ray Allen and Wally Szczerbiak comparisons don't necessarily hold up (and in fact, might be wildly overstated, according to some correspondence other have had) - those who have seen him think he is a slasher.
- Oklahoma State came into play late; Marquette and St. John's supposedly rescinded their offers to Williams. Though his coach is quoted as saying "St. John's really wanted him." And Marquette signed a player for next year's class instead of Williams.
And the Kentucky Sports Radio blog found some video on him:
Will St. John's regret not signing this cat? Though I guess now he's officially a 'Cat. Time will tell. For all we know, Coach Norm Roberts might have chatted with his former colleague Billy Clyde Gillispie (under Bill Self), about the up and coming guard. Kentucky could use some scorers with Ramel Bradley and Joe Crawford moving on, but I thought they had brought in a few highly-rated wings. But a scholarship with Kentucky is pretty sweet for a guy no college basketball recruiting follower had heard of 6 months ago.
