St. John's basketball recruiting: James Padgett

James Padgett of Lincoln High SchoolAccording to Rivals ($), Lincoln High School star forward James Padgett will have in-home visits with Pittsburgh + St. John's, and will visit the Pitt Panthers along with Maryland.

Additionally, the Spartanburg Herald Journal reports that the South Carolina Gamecocks is no longer involved with the Padgett. Padgett state that he "was no longer hearing from the Gamecocks" and is focused on schools in the northeast.

He's listed at 6'7, 210 pounds on Rivals, 6'8 on ESPN, and 6'8 on Scout.

From all accounts, he's a raw offensive player and a strong rebounder. On one hand, I think St. John's is at the right point to bring in a raw player who won't see a lot of playing time, since the class and pecking order is fairly established. And that works well if that player has big-time potential. And he is tall.

But he also is raw on offense (and who is to say how a player will develop in the next year) and the Red Storm needs to score as well as rebound. One thing the team will need is the kind of forward who can defend in space, who can defend the forwards who can slash from the high post or even the perimeter.

Can Padgett be that guy?
