St. John's basketball - Sean Evans Half-Season Conference Report

(stats acquired from Statsheet.com. Photos courtesy of Red Storm Sports. All stats are as of February 10th.)

On Norm Roberts' Red Storm teams, nothing has value as much as hustle. As such, Sean Evans is an integral part of the team. Part of the three-man forward rotation with Burrell and Rob Thomas, Evans' forte is running faster than other players up court and being the muscle. Last year, as Dave at Johnny Jungle aptly put it, he had "defensive ADD."

He's paying better attention now.

Sean Evans vs <a class='sbn-auto-link' href=Augustus Gilchrist" align="right" width="230" height="399" />Though his offense in conference hasn't been top-notch, Evans is an eager participant, putting up a lot of shots for a guy who isn't creating jump shots or back-to-the-basket opportunities. He has nearly matched his freshman year number of free-throw attempts.

He gets a solid number of steals for a forward and creates chaos wherever he goes. Most importantly, he has increased his offensive rebounding rate and remains decent on defensive boards.

One wonders what kind of role Sean Evans would have on another team. He represents hustle, floor-burns, hard work, and defense. But he isn't particularly tall, and he plays like a rebounding small forward (notice the complete absence of blocked shots). His free throw shooting is cringe-inducing, and he leaves so many points on the court with those misses. He turns the ball over a lot for a player who doesn't create his shot. His dribble has improved but won't be used for high school film study anytime soon.

But for this Red Storm team, Sean Evans is a rock. His aggressiveness is sorely needed. With a tighter dribble, he could be a surprise one day.

Below are tables with Evans' conference numbers from this year and his freshman year. To better understand the individual tempo-free statistics mean, read here and a glossary of terms here.
