The two tri-state area schools have only met twice.

St. John’s (2-1) has some momentum with the win over Bucknell. The Red Storm will continue the New York City portion of their schedule Friday with another tri-state school - this time, the Red Storm will face Monmouth (1-2) at Carnesecca Arena.

Despite being a 90-minute drive (on a good day) from each other, St. John’s and Monmouth haven’t met often in the last 30-plus years. In fact, their all-time series consists of just two games, both of which the Redmen dominated. Overall, the Big East has had its way with MAAC opponents since 1980, going 227-51 over that span.

This was the season opener for both teams as they met in the first round in the old Lapchick Tournament, which for years was a staple of the St. John’s basketball season. This win improved the Redmen’s record to 31-0 in the tournament.

The late Malik Sealy led St. John’s with 22 points as the team won it's 21st straight season-opening game. Robert Werdann added 17 point for St. John’s.

December 23, 1985 - St. John’s 98, Monmouth 58

Eleventh-ranked St. John’s got an early Christmas present when five players scored in double figures as the team won their eighth straight game

Walter Berry led the way with 23 points as Ron Rowan and Willie Glass each contributed 17 points for St. John’s.

Shelton Jones (16 points) and Mark Jackson (10 points) were the other two Redmen to score in double figures.

Monmouth freshman Fernando Sanders, who was making his season debut, scored a team-high 11 points.
