St. John’s is facing some difficult times these days. Even their victory over Dartmouth last Saturday to end a five-game losing streak was a bit of a struggle. The Red Storm host Seton Hall Thursday having lost nine straight conference games. Their last Big East win came Feb. 20 against a team that now plays in the American Conference (South Florida).
Seton Hall will present another significant challenge for St. John’s as the schools renew their local rivalry. Not only are the Pirates coming off a good win on the road against Georgetown, but they’ve beaten St. John’s in three of their last four meetings.
St. John’s once dominated this series in the early 1980s, but Seton Hall has closed the gap in the last 10 seasons. The Pirates have dominated some of those meetings. The Red Storm are 30-26 against the Pirates since the two schools started meeting in the Big East in 1981. The recent matchups, below.
January 27, 2013: St. John’s 71 Seton Hall 67
D`Angelo Harrison scored a game-high 24 points as the Red Storm won their fourth straight game. At the time, the win tied St. John’s for third place in the Big East with Pitt and behind Syracuse and Marquette.
Harrison shot 6-for-13 from the field and was 9-for-10 from the free throw line. Overall, St. John’s made 15 of 20 free throws as they came into the game as the worst shooting free throw team in Division I at 62.2%.
JaKarr Sampson scored 19 points, 13 of which came in the first half.
Eugene Teague scored a team-high 22 points for the Pirates.
February 14, 2012: Seton Hall 94, St. John’s 64
The rout was on after the first seven minutes as the Pirates used a barrage of three-pointers to dominate St. John’s at the Prudential Center.
Seton Hall was 15-for-24 from beyond the arc. Six different Pirates hit a 3-pointer. This game also saw six different Pirates score in double figures. Jordan Theodore led the way with 16 points.
Moe Harkless scored a team-high 15 points for the Johnnies. Harrison added 12 points.
March 3, 2011: Seton Hall 84, #15 St. John’s 70
This loss was ugly in more ways than one as Seton Hall stopped the Johnnies’ six-game winning streak with a barrage of three-pointers. The Red Storm also lost the chance at a double-bye in the Big East Tournament.
Head coach Steve Lavin was hit with a double-technical and tossed from the game late in the second half. And then with less than 10 seconds remaining in the game, Justin Burrell was called for a flagrant foul and also ejected.
Jeremy Hazell scored a game-high 31 points for Seton Hall. Dwight Hardy wasn’t too bad himself as he led St. John’s with 23 points.
Seton Hall, who came into the game shooting just 28.4 percent from 3, hit 12-of-18 shots from beyond the arc.
February 17, 2010: Seton Hall 59, St. John’s 50
Seton Hall pulled out the win at Carnesecca Arena despite losing Hazell for the majority of the game due to a hand injury. Hazell came into the game as the second-leading scorer in the conference at 22.4 points per game.
Jeff Robinson stepped up nicely for Hazell and scored 16 points with nine rebounds. This happened to be Seton Hall’s first road conference win of the season.
Sean Evans led St. John’s with 14 points. Herb Pope delivered q nut punch to Malik Boothe, Seton Hall players reportedly got into a skirmish with St. John's students, the shot clocks didn't work, and all in all it was an ugly evening.
