College basketball is always filled with change; the departure of JaKarr Sampson to the pros does not mean that the sky is falling, exactly, for the Red Storm.
Fans are upset that Sampson wants to continue his development on the pro level, but also worried about what comes next for a Red Storm team that fell short of goals this season, and graduates many of its stars next.
JaKarr could have been a huge part of that; but if he feels the need to develop on a higher level, as Moe Harkless has with the Orlando Magic, good luck to him; college basketball is always filled with change and kids want to pursue their dreams.
Of course, there are places where St. John's needs to find a replacement. Statistically, St. John's needs to replace their third-best offensive rebounder and fourth-best defensive rebounder in conference play (he was third-best at both over the course of the season). Sampson's athleticism made opponents think in transition, and he was an integral part of the shot-blocking back line for St. John's.
And with four open spots on the roster, there is room for some late-season recruits or JUCOs and transfers from other programs.
It will take hard work to get the team ready for next year, with a front line that currently consists of Chris Obekpa and Christian Jones, both of whom need to rebound a higher percentage of opponents' missed shots.
With JaKarr Sampson leaving, the scholarship chart needs an update.
