St. John's schedule - updated dates!

Brad Penner-USA TODAY Sports

We have known about many of the matchups coming this season, but now there are dates for your Red Storm men's basketball planning purposes. The season is far away... but here is what we know.

Rumble_icon_x-small_copy_mediumSt. John's will travel to Syracuse on December 6, 2014, a rematch of last winter's 68-63 loss to the Orange in Madison Square Garden. Our friends at Nunes Magician are of two minds of the game - some appreciate the old-school rivalry as continuing, while others just want the Madison Square Garden contests - so the Orange can plant their New York flag.

Rumble_icon_x-small_copy_medium St. Joseph's released their schedule, which has dates for the four-team St. John's pod [.pdf of St. Joe's schedule] in the preseason NIT - November 17 and 19 (Monday and Wednesday). St. Joseph's may not play St. John's, but will be in the four-team group with Stony Brook; matchups, and the fourth team in the pod will come later. The NIT semifinals and finals will be on November 26 and November 28 (Wednesday and Friday).

Last season's preseason NIT found host Rutgers losing to Drexel. The full schedule was not released until mid-September last year, so it may be a while until we know the full schedule and matchups.

Rumble_icon_x-small_copy_mediumNick Faust is transferring to Long Beach State. No, he won't be eligible next season when LBSU comes to play at St. John's. Long Beach State is now scheduled for December 22nd - a heck of an ugly sweater game/ pre-Christmas matchup.

Saint Mary's is scheduled for December 20, according to Jon Rothstein.

Below, a list of possible opponents for St. John's. Georgia, Gonzaga, Minnesota, St. Joseph's, and Stony Brook are possible matchups, based on the paths for each in the preseason NIT.

KenPom Rank
Season Finish? Conference
Duke Blue Devils
NCAAT Rd 64 Atlantic Coast
With another class filled with HS All-Americans, plus experience in the backcourt, Duke continues to be dangerous.
Georgia Bulldogs
NIT 2nd Rd Southeastern
Mark Fox hopes he has the right combination with his defensive-minded Bulldogs team, who played St. John's at the Garden in 2009. They return for the preseason NIT.
Gonzaga Bulldogs
NCAAT 2nd Rd West Coast
The always-solid Zags return Przemek Karnowski, Kevin Pangos - and two Big East transfers in Angel Nunez and Gerard Coleman for next year's preseason NIT.
Long Beach State 49ers
Big West 2nd Rd Big West
Went 10-6 in Big West Conference with experienced coach Dan Monson; have talented backcourt including former UCLA wing Tyler Lamb. Scheduled for December 22 - the likely Ugly Sweater game.
Minnesota Golden Gophers
NIT (Champion) Big Ten
Richard Pitino's team graduates one impact senior and should be a difficult matchup in the preseason NIT.
St. Mary`s Gaels
NIT 2nd Rd West Coast
Lost in second round of NIT; graduate a number of impact seniors but always find a way to be effective under Randy Bennett. Scheduled for December 20.
St. Joseph`s Hawks
NCAAT 2nd Rd Atlantic-10
With three major contributors graduating, Phil Martelli's team will need to adjust and learn to contend.
Stony Brook Seawolves
CBIT 1st Rd America East
The Seawolves have been tough for years but haven't broken through to the NCAA Tournament with Steve Pikiell; but they are talented and have impact freshmen and sophomores returning.
@ Syracuse Orange
NCAAT Rd 32 Atlantic Coast
St. John's returns to the Carrier Dome on December 6 to play Canada's New York team, who lost in the second round of the NCAA Tourney, and lose a bunch of talent.
Tulane Green Wave
CBIT 1st Rd American
Young team moving into the American Conference, lost to Princeton by one; coach Ed Conroy is in talks to extend contract.
CBIT - College Basketball Invitational Tournament
NCAAT - National Collegiate Athletic Association Tournament
NIT - National Invitational Tournament

What do you think about the schedule so far? Are there any teams you're sneaky-excited to see?
