This week, the New York-area Big East squads match up at Carnesecca Arena on a special day for St. John's - and both teams need wins, badly, with the NCAA Tournament and the end of the regular season just a couple of weeks away. The Seton Hall Pirates - 15-11, 5-9 in the Big East - face off against the St. John's Red Storm at noon on Saturday; St. John's comes in with a 17-9 record after the loss at Georgetown, 6-7 in the Big East.
The last time the two teams faced off, they were without Isaiah Whitehead, the talented freshman shot-creator at guard, and handled St. John's 78-67 in Newark, beginning a long slide away from the national rankings for Steve Lavin's club.
But that Seton Hall promise has gone sour as infighting has exposed a rift publicly between the upperclassmen and the freshmen, similar to the Tommy Amaker days.
Now neither team is ranked, and both teams are desperate.
