NCAA Profile: Austin Peay Governors

Let's Go Peay! No really, that's their official site.

Jim Brown-USA TODAY Sports

Team: Austin Peay Governors

Conference: Ohio Valley Conference

Coach: Dave Loos

Record: 18-17, 7-9 in conference

KenPom Rank: 212

Good wins: None - except for four straight in the Ohio Valley Conference Tournament.

Impact Players: Josh Robinson, 6'2" guard who scores 17 points per game; Chris Horton, a forward who scores 20 points per game and grabs 12 rebounds/ contest. Jared Savage has come on as late.

How did they get in?: Austin Peay was a surprise coming out of an Ohio Valley Conference that allows the two best teams to play two fewer games in the conference tourney.

The Governors survived a gauntlet, beating two hometown teams at the neutral site in Nashville, including perennial top-three squad Belmont. The Belmont game took overtime, but the victory in the finals over Tennessee Martin wasn't that close. Freshman guard Jared Savage hit eight three-pointers to lead the Govs, who had a losing record going into the conference tourney.

How far can this team go in the NCAA Tournament?: Chris Horton was a solid rebounder in season-opening games against Vanderbilt and Indiana; and Jared Savage, son of an Austin Peay hall of Famer, earned himself more time, culminating in six straight starts - which have been six straight wins. Jared Savage's father, Jermaine, played for head coach Dave Loos as well. This is a team that could, maybe, surprise a team or two, get to the Round of 32.

But they get Kansas, a team that won't mess around with a low-level team like the Governors. First round knockout.

Last time in the NCAA Tournament: 2008 under current coach Dave Loos, who has been head man since 1990.
