Team: Florida Gulf Coast Eagles
Conference: Atlantic Sun
Coach: Joe Dooley
Record: 20-13
KenPom Rank: 175
Good Wins: The Eagles haven't beaten any great teams this year. UMass and North Florida were the best victories so far this season.
Impact Players: Marc-Eddy Norelia is the star of this Eagles team. He currently averages about 17 points and 9 rebounds per game, while shooting 54% from the field. Another key player is point guard Zach Johnson. He is currently averaging about 12 points per game, while leading the team in assists. Don't forget about Filip Cvjeticanin. He is the main three-point shooter on the Eagles, converting on the deep-ball about 37% of the time.
How did they get in?: The Eagles proved experts wrong, and won three games in three days to qualify for the Big Dance. Most believed North Florida was the team that would represent the Atlantic Sun Conference. Florida Gulf Coast proved most wrong by topping Kennesaw State, North Florida, and Stetson in the Atlantic Sun Tournament.
How far can they go?: As much as I want FGCU to advance, it doesn't seem they have another postseason run in them. They haven't displayed yet that they could beat a highly touted team. The closest they have come to topping a quality team was a 10 point loss to Texas A&M. But after all it is March, anything can happen. If a team has an off-night against the Eagles, or FGCU is really hot from the field they could make some noise in the tournament. It doesn't seem very likely that the Eagles could advance very far.
Last time in NCAA Tournament: Who doesn't remember the magical 2013 run from FGCU. As a 15 seed, the Eagles pulled off two shockers against Georgetown and San Diego State, before losing to the Florida Gators in the Sweet 16. If you don't recall their 2013 run, the clip below should refresh your mind.
