Team: Iona Gaels
Conference: Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC)
Coach: Tim Cluess
Record: 22-10
KenPom Rank: 73
Good Wins:
- @ Monmouth
- Monmouth (MAAC Tournament)
Impact Players: Senior guard A.J English has dominated the MAAC all season long. He currently averages 22 points, 5 rebounds, and 5 assists per game. You don't want him on the free-throw line, he shoots about 84% from the charity stripe. Another contributor is Jordan Washington, who scores about 14 points per game.
How did they get in?: Going into the MAAC Tournament, the only shot the Gaels had was to win the MAAC Conference. They did just that by winning three straight games against Canisius, Siena, and Monmouth. These wins capped an 18-4 record in the last 22 games of the season.
How far can they go?: This team could possibly upset Iowa State in the first round. With the Gaels weapons, a win in the big dance is not out of the question. It seems very unlikely that this team could move past the Round of 32, or even win one game. Even though it is unlikely, don't be shocked if the Cyclones fall to Iona.
Last time in NCAA Tournament: Ohio State blew out Iona in the 2013 NCAA Tournament Second Round. They look to improve their 1-10 record in the NCAA Tournament starting with Iowa State.
