NCAA Profile: Northern Iowa Panthers

The Panthers have upsets on their mind as they come into the NCAA Tournament as Missouri Valley champions.

Jeff Curry-USA TODAY Sports

Team: Northern Iowa Panthers

Conference: Missouri Valley Conference

Coach: Ben Jacobson

Record: 22-12 (11-7 conference)

KenPom Rank: 76

Good wins: North Carolina, Iowa State, Wichita State (twice)

Impact Players: Senior Wes Washpun leads the Panthers in both scoring and assists, with averages of 14.3 points and five assists per game. Matt Bohannon, Paul Jesperson and Jeremy Morgan all average in double figures as well.

How did they get in?: Northern Iowa won its second straight Missouri Valley conference title with a 56-54 win over Evansville on March 6. They upended top-seeded Wichita State in a overtime battle in the Semifinals for their second win over the Shockers this season.

How far can this team go in the NCAA Tournament?: They've proven that they have no problem going toe-to-toe with top 25 teams so far this season, but beating teams like North Carolina and Iowa State is a lot harder to do in March than it is in November and December. It's unlikely that they make it out of the first weekend, but you have to keep those upset wins in your mind.

Last time in NCAA Tournament: 2015. As a five-seed they knocked off Wyoming before falling to Louisville in the Round of 32.
