NCAA Profile: Wichita State Shockers

The Shockers are a better team with point guard Van Vleet, who was injured for their early non-conference losses.

Team: Wichita State Shockers

Conference: Missouri Valley Conference

Coach: Gregg Marshall

Record: 24-8, 16-2in conference

KenPom Rank: 12

Good wins: Home over Utah.

Impact Players: Seniors Fred VanVleet and Ron Baker have been major players for four NCAA Tournament teams. VanVleet is one of the country's best passers; Baker can get his jump shot off and is a good shooter and defender. They are complemented by a pair of young big men in Markis McDuffie, a top-100 forward from New Jersey and a bench that has played 42% of the team's minutes - best for eighth in the country.

How did they get in?: The "shocker" here is Wichita State's inclusion. Some metrics loved them and others noted their three-game nadir at the Advocare Tournament in Orlando in November, where guard Fred VanVleet sat out with an injury.

How far can this team go in the NCAA Tournament?: This team is a wild card. But given their experience in the Tourney - a Final Four run in 2013, a Sweet Sixteen run last year - and the fact that their defense has held every single defense below 1 point per possession since January - this team could reach the Elite Eight.

Last time in the NCAA Tournament: Last season; the Shokcers have been to the Tournament for five years in a row, including a year where they earned a #1 seed and were undefeated before falling in the second round to Kentucky. That was their WORST performance in the past four years.
