NCAA Profiles: Hampton Pirates

The MEAC champions will meet UVA in the First Round.

Peter Casey-USA TODAY Sports

Team: Hampton Pirates

Conference: MEAC

Coach: Edward Joyner

Record: 21-10, 13-3

KenPom Ranking: 222

Good wins: None

Impact Players: Reginald Johnson Jr. (18.3 ppg), Quinton Chievous (17.0 ppg, 11.0 rpg)

How did they get in?: The Pirates won three games in four days in the MEAC Conference Tournament, beating Morgan State by two, Savannah State by 34 and South Carolina State by 12.

How far can this team go in the NCAA Tournament?: They avoided a play-in game so now they will have to match-up in the first round against Tony Bennett and the Virginia Cavaliers. Johnson and Chievous are talented on the interior but they will be no match for Malcolm Brogdon and the Cavs' intense pack line defense.

Last time in the NCAA Tournament: Last year they beat Manhattan by 10 in the play-in game in Dayton. They played the number one overall seed Kentucky in the Round of 64, losing by 23 to the undefeated Wildcats.
