NCAA Profile: VCU Rams

The Rams will take on Oregon State in the first round.

Aaron Doster-USA TODAY Sports

Team: VCU Rams

Conference: Atlantic 10

Coach: Will Wade

Record: 24-10, 14-4

KenPom Ranking: 35

Good wins: at St. Joe's, St. Bonaventure, at George Washington

Impact Players: Melvin Johnson (17.4 ppg, 39% from three), Korey Billbury (11.6 ppg), JeQuan Lewis (10.7 ppg, 4.9 apg), Mo Alie-Cox (10.2 ppg, 5.1 rpg)

How did they get in?: Even though the Rams didn't come up with quality wins in the non-conference portion of their schedule, they tested themselves. VCU played Wisconsin, Duke, Middle Tennessee, Florida State, Georgia Tech and Cincinnati. They also made the final of the A-10 Conference Tournament - before losing to St. Joe's - and finished third in the regular season standings.

How far can this team go?: The Rams will play Oregon State in the first round but the Beavers could be without freshman forward Tres Tinkle. VCU has the experience, talent and feistiness to defeat their Pac-12 competitor and possibly challenge Oklahoma in the second round. The West is the most wide open region in the entire bracket so the Rams could become a sleeper Sweet 16 team.

Last time in the NCAA Tournament: Last year but they lost to Ohio State in the first round.
