NCAA Profile: North Carolina Tarheels

Hall of Fame coach Roy Williams guides his 26th team to the NCAA Tournament.

Rob Kinnan-USA TODAY Sports

Team: North Carolina Tarheels

Conference: ACC

Coach: Roy Williams

Record: 28-6

KenPom Rank: 4

Good Wins:

  • Maryland
  • Syracuse (x2)
  • Pitt (x2)
  • @ Duke
  • Notre Dame (ACC Tournament)
  • Virginia (ACC Tournament)

Impact Players: Senior guard Marcus Paige is a leader on the team that scores about 12 points per game. Forward Brice Johnson averages a double-double of 17 points and 11 rebounds per contest. He also leads the team in blocked shots and field goal percentage.

How did they get in?: North Carolina dominated the entire season. It was never a possibility that they could miss the NCAA Tournament. They got rewarded with a 1 seed from the committee in honor of their spectacular regular season.

How far can they go?: Like many years, North Carolina is a National Championship contender. This Carolina team in particular does a nice job on offense giving themselves plenty of second-chances. They also do a very nice job defending, excluding the three-point line.

UNC should breeze through the first weekend, but then competition should stiffen up. The bracket is set up for a potential match-up with Indiana or Kentucky in the Sweet 16, and West Virginia in the Elite Eight. Don't be surprised if Roy Williams leads his team to the Final Four, but it won't be the easiest task for Carolina.

Last time in NCAA Tournament: The Tarheels were last in the NCAA Tournament last season. After beating Harvard and Arkansas to advance to the Sweet 16, North Carolina would lose to eventual National runner-up Wisconsin.
