NCAA Profile: Southern Jaguars

Is this the year a 16 beats a 1 seed? Southern almost did it to Gonzaga four years ago.

Team: Southern Jaguars

Conference: Southwestern Athletic Conference

Coach: Roman Banks

Record: 22-12 overall, 11-7 in conference

KenPom Rank: 226

Good wins: at Mississippi State.

Impact Players: Senior guard Adrian Rodgers averages 17 points and five rebounds per game; Trelun Banks - the coach's son - adds 13 points per game and two assists. Christopher Hyder averages 10 points and five assists per contest as well.

How did they get in?: Southern won three games in the SWAC Tournament, taking out top seed Texas Southern along the way, to earn the league's automatic bid to the Tournament. The Jaguars did drop four of five late in the season, but won in the conference tournament - after relegating Brooklyn guard Rashad Andrews to deep bench duty and giving more time to forward D`Arian Allen

How far can this team go in the NCAA Tournament?: The two worst teams in the field face off on Wednesday night in what will actually be a fun contrast of styles. Southern wants to run, while Holy Cross wants to put out beach chairs and keep the pace leisurely. Both teams enjoyed surprise runs through their conference tournaments, and both will believe they have a chance to reach the main draw, the top-64. Southern could do it; they protect the ball and force steals. But will they take good outside shots against the Holy Cross zone?

Anyway, they're not getting past 1-seed Oregon on Friday. So don't overthink it.

Last time in the NCAA Tournament: 2013, where they lost in the first round after giving Gonzaga a really good run.
