Earlier this month, St. John's played one of their best games of the season and nearly knocked off the Marquette Golden Eagles on their home court, losing 81-75. The Red Storm were strong on the offensive end and Kassoum Yakwe defended the paint with excellence, limiting Henry Ellenson and Luke Fischer.
Chris Mullin's unit will need more of the same on Sunday if they are going to pull off the upset and earn their first Big East victory. Yakwe will have to stay out of foul trouble, the guards will have to be active on the glass and the home team will also have to improve their shot selection after a rough outing at Butler.
The good news is the Red Storm have had more than a week off, giving them an opportunity to regroup mentally and physically for the final month and a half of conference play. And this may be the best chance (until February 17th against DePaul) to snap their losing streak with Seton Hall, Villanova, Xavier, Butler, Georgetown and Villanova (again) upcoming in the next couple of weeks.
This match-up was originally supposed to be played on Saturday night at Madison Square Garden, but because of Winter Storm 'Jonas' (and two feet of snow) the game was moved to Queens on Sunday.
