St. John’s received the formal paperwork signing Zach Brown, a 7’1”, 260 pound center from Miami, to the Red Storm for next season.
Brown committed over the summer in July, and cited the positive support from Chris Mullin and the staff as a major reason why he committed. Brown had recently left the powerhouse Putnam Science Academy prep program after a fight on the court, and is also dealing with some robbery charges that the staff is confident will be dropped or reduced to a minor charge.
Brown is finishing his senior year at Calusa Prep, his fourth high school in as many years.
For all the possible flags, though, Brown is considered a top-60 player in most recruiting services and a top 40 player by ESPN. Brown, the highest-recruited player on ESPN who has come to St. John’s since Rysheed Jordan, bring a large frame and a strong rebounding presence to the Johnnies.
Though raw on offense, he is willing to bang, and the staff hopes he is a final piece to help the team get to the NCAA Tournament in a year’s time.
He has competed in the Nike Basketball Skills Academy and th Nike Elite One Hundred camp.
“We are excited to welcome Zach to our basketball family,” said St. John’s head coach Mullin. “He can have an immediate impact on our team as he gives us another big target in the post and elite rim protector. We are supportive of Zach as he works toward his goals on and off the court, and believe that our basketball program and university can provide him with the resources to be successful.”
