On Sunday at Madison Square Garden against Villanova, St. John's was competitive for one half as they trailed by just a single point at the break. They went on to lose by 13 points because of a lack luster offensive performance but that will have to turn around quickly if the Johnnies have any chance on Wednesday night against the sixth ranked Xavier Musketeers on the road.
Edmond Sumner, who missed the close first match-up between the two teams at Carnesecca Arena, will be in the lineup and will likely match-up with Federico Mussini on the defensive end. Sumner has incredible length and energy on defense and could pose a major problem for Mussini, who struggles versus long guards (he had 12 combined points against Providence and Seton Hall).
While Sumner's presence could be key for Chris Mack's squad, their toughness, rebounding prowess, depth and experience stand out. Kassoum Yakwe has to have a monster game on the glass as the physicality of James Farr and Jalen Reynolds is a load to deal with down low.
Searching for their first Big East win, the young Johnnies roster is about to embark on yet another important experience.
Can Christian Jones continue his terrific play as of late?
Will the shots start falling for the Red Storm? Better ball movement?
The Red Storm played excellent halfcourt defense against Villanova but their press has been working well. Will Mullin implement that zone press to force early turnovers and try to change the game?
We would love to hear what you think!
