St. John’s Soccer Update: Women set for elimination game

A win or draw means a postseason shot. A loss ends the postseason hopes.

After a mid-season drought, the St. John’s women’s soccer team has put together a four-game win streak to put them in a comfortable position for post-season play.

A win or a draw tomorrow in Chicago against DePaul will get the job done for the Red Storm. St. John’s currently sits in sixth place with 12 points, while the Blue Demons are right behind them in seventh place with 10 points.

Despite St. John’s winning the last meeting 1-0 last year in Queens, St. John’s has had some struggles in Chicago. DePaul has a 2-0-1 record at home against the Red Storm, with the most recent meeting ending a 1-1 draw in 2015.

DePaul should come into the game feeling good. An offensive explosion in their last game saw them beat Villanova 6-3. The Blue Demons’ Alexa Benn was named Big East Offensive Player of the week after her hat trick against the Wildcats.

As they have for most of this season, St. John’s will look to Christina Bellero for goals. She leads the team with seven goals. However, the most underrated player on the field might be Lucy Whipp, who has quietly gathered a team leading five assists.

This game will also be a test for the St. John’s goalies. Whoever Head Coach Ian Stone decides to start, he should feel confident.

Redshirt freshman Jordan Kamp has a goals against average of under one, while freshman Antonia Tammaro has played well in spot appearances. She held 15th ranked Georgetown and Long Beach State’s high powered offenses to just one goal apiece.

The game is set for a 4:00 p.m. kick off and can be seen on the Big East Digital Network.
