This year, the regional ECAC awards took notice of St. John’s captain Jesse Schaefer, a defender who earned a spot on their women’s soccer Honorable Mention list.
Schaefer was a four-year starter for Ian Stone’s soccer squad and won a Big East Defensive Player of the Week award in October. She played in 17 games, took three shots this season, and was issued two yellow cards.
She also won a spot on the all-district team for the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA), along with teammate Shea Connors. Both were named to the Big East Tournament all-tournament team in 2016 on their way to an NCAA Tournament berth.
The ECAC, recognizing strong players up and down the east coast, also recognized three Goergetown players (Rachel Corboz, Elizabeth Wenger and Arielle Schechtman).
St. John’s finished the season 8-9-1 overall and 4-5-0 in Big East conference play, just missing the league’s postseason tournament.
