Behind an efficient performance on Saturday in a 86-80 win over rival Georgetown and a solid performance in a loss to Marquette, Shamorie Ponds wins the Big East’s Freshman of the Week award.
This week’s honor is Ponds’ fifth of the season. While the competition is solid from players like Justin Patton and Markus Howard and teammate Marcus LoVett, he has a good shot at winning the Big East’s Freshman of the Year award.
Ponds was the preseason Freshman of the Year as well; if he won, he would join Moe Harkless and JaKarr Sampson as St. John’s winners in this decade.
Shamorie Ponds is the top freshman scorer in the Big East. Against Georgetown, Ponds scored 24 points on 67% shooting inside the arc (8/12 shooting), 67% shooting outside the arc and a perfect 2/2 from the free throw line.
Bashir Ahmed also earned his third mention as a Big East Honor Roll member this season after averaging 18 points and five rebounds per game, including scoring 14 of 16 points in the second half to knock down Georgetown.
Big East Player of the Week
Kelan Martin, Butler, F, Jr. - Martin averaged 23.5 points and 7.5 rebounds in a 2-0 week on the road that included a 74-66 win at No. 2 Villanova and an 88-79 victory at Xavier.
