After going 1-1 last week with a win over Marquette and a loss to Villanova, a pair of St. John’s players who led the charge earned this week’s honors from the Big East Conference.
Marcus LoVett, who averaged 20 points over the two games for the Red Storm, was named the Big East’s Freshman of the Week for the first time this season; Shamorie Ponds, the preseason Freshman of the Year, has received many of the honors, though LoVett has been as impactful on the court
LoVett averaged 5.5 assists and 3.5 steals in between the two games, along with 3.5 turnovers. He shot 10/14 (71%) inside the arc and 5/12 (42%) from beyond the three-point line.
Junior forward Bashir Ahmed earned a spot on the five-player Big East Honor Roll. The junior wing from the Bronx averaged 19 points, 6.5 rebounds, two assists, while shooting 52% inside the arc and 27% outside. In Big East play, Ahmed is currently averaging 42% shooting on two-pointers; the increased efficiency is a positive sign.
