According to Jon Rothstein of FanRag Sports, St. John’s will play the Saint Joseph’s Hawks at Mohegan Sun in Uncasville, Connecticut. This contest is set for December 20th as part of a doubleheader with Providence and Houston. Official times have yet to be determined.
Saint Joseph’s has the looks of a top tier team in the Atlantic-10. They return their top scorer in Shavar Newkirk. He averaged 20 points per contest up until his ACL injury in late December. In addition, the Hawks brought back fellow guard Lamarr Kimble. He averaged about 16 points per contest before suffering from a season-ending fracture in his left foot.
As for St. John’s, they have continued to fill out their schedule for next season. Their impressive slate includes a contest in Phoneix against Grand Canyon, a game in Los Angeles against Arizona State, and a home date with the Duke Blue Devils. On top of that, the Johnnies will participate in the AdvoCare Invitational, which is highlighted by West Virginia, Missouri, and Nebraska. Alongside sturdy competition in Big East play, the Johnnies will have ample opportunity to build an impressive NCAA tournament resume.
St. John’s has not made the NCAA Tournament since 2014-15 but looks to trending upward after adding some complementary pieces to a solid team. Yesterday’s news regarding Sidney Wilson’s commitment only proves to a larger extent how Chris Mullin is reviving this previously stagnant program. Wilson will likely play a large role behind forward Bashir Ahmed.
