Behind a game-winning layup with less than three seconds left by Steve Burtt and 23 points from St. John’s alumnus D’Angelo Harrison, Gaelnation upset 6th seeded City of Gods, 88-86.
Burtt also contributed 23 points with his fellow backcourt member Harrison, who also grabbed seven rebounds. Gaelnation’s backcourt accounted for over half of the team’s points. Javier Carter, who had 10 points, was the only other member of the team to score in double figures.
Gaelnation shot close to 50% from behind the arc, while City of Gods struggled from deep and from the free throw line, where they only shot just over 50% for the game. Gaelnation was consistent from the line all game.
City of Gods had a more balanced attack with six players in double figures, and they only committed eight turnovers, but they could never figure out a way to stop Gaelnation’s electric backcourt.
David Hawkins had a team high 17 points in 26 minutes of action.
Harrison will get a chance to renew an old rivalry as Gaelnation is set to take on the #3 seed team made up of Syracuse alumni, Boeheim’s Army. The game is scheduled for Sunday, July 9th at 2:45 PM in Philadelphia.
Gaelnation told The Basketball Tournaments website that they made their team to put mid-majors on the map, and with upsets like this, they just might be onto something.
