Any semblance of the St. John’s-Syracuse long-storied rivalry never disappoints, even if it’s not officially the Red Storm versus the Orange.
Boeheim’s army, made up strictly of Syracuse Alumni, threw away a 20-point halftime lead, only to gain it back in the overtime period and eventually beat the 11th seeded Gaelnation.
Eric Devendorf led the way for the former Orangemen with a double-double, scoring 23 points and collecting 10 rebounds. Donte Green had a team-high 32 points.
Rick Jackson scored the most important bucket for Boeheim’s Army, a put-back layup with 48 seconds left in the second overtime period to put the Army up 102-100.
Gaelnation, made of D`Angelo Harrison and Iona alums, outscored their opponent 48-33 in the second half in order to tie the game up and eventually take the lead for a little bit, but could not find enough to take a big enough lead on the Syracuse alumni.
D’Angelo Harrison and former Iona guard Stephen Burtt combined for 46 points in their first round win, and combined on Sunday for 56 of the team’s 100 points. Javier Carter was a difficult matchup all game, finishing with 14 points and and an astounding 21 rebounds. Isaiah Williams also contributed 14 points off the bench.
The biggest discrepancy on the stat sheet proved to be on the glass, where the former Orangemen stars outrebounded Gaelnation 53-43, including 16 offensive rebounds.
Boeheim’s Army’s next game will be Thursday July 20th in Brooklyn at 7:00 PM and will be televised on ESPN2.
