Game thread: St. John’s at Butler

NCAA Basketball: St. John at Butler Brian Spurlock-USA TODAY Sports

Hinkle Fieldhouse has not been friendly. St. John’s has lost by 24, 20 and 23 in the past three seasons at Hinkle.

Last year, St. John’s gave up 100 points, Chris Mullin picked up another technical foul, and the Johnnies took a revenge punch on the chin from the Butler Bulldogs in Indianapolis.

This season, the 0-9 (in the Big East) Red Storm travel to Indy for their first matchup against the Butler Way, facing new coach LaVall Jordan for the first time.

All of that considered, no time like the present for a win, am I right?

St. John’s lists both guard Shamorie Ponds and Kassoum Yakwe as game-time decisions (update: Yakwe is out); Yakwe is nursing an injured ankle and Ponds is recovering from a bruised quad in the Creighton game.

NY Post: Frustrated St. John’s knows thin margin between winning and losing

In all the close losses, St. John’s has shown patches of promise, doing good things, only to be undone by stretches of poor shot selection, missed defensive assignments, and scoring droughts. Part of it, of course, is the lack of depth, so much being asked of the starters. The bench of Yakwe, Bryan Trimble Jr. and Amar Alibegovic is averaging a combined 6.6 points per game in 37 minutes this season.
