Recruiting profile: 2018 guard Alan Griffin

St. John’s has had interest in the White Plains guard

With the announcement that guard Marcus LoVett will not be returning to St. John’s (a conclusion many thought was logical based on the disconnect between the staff and the player with respect to his injury), St. John’s now has at least two scholarships to work with for next season.

Archbishop Stepinac guard Alan Griffin has been a player who has caught the Red Storm’s recruiting eye from last summer. But the mutual interest has risen recently, with an offer coming in January and a visit to the home game against Xavier.

Griffin may not be ranked on ESPN or 247Sports, but he has attracted interest and offers from Minnesota, Rutgers and other programs. Griffin has been a big part of Stepinac’s play this season, as a scoring wing who contributes across the board.

From Prep Hoops:

Griffin is scoring 18.2 points per game with ten rebounds, 4.1 assists, 2.5 steals, and two blocks a game.

“Alan is a very talented wing who can score the ball at a high level,” Griffin said. “At 6-5 he is long and athletic and shoots it well. However, he does more than that – can guard bigger and smaller/quicker guys and also rebounds very well for his size.”

Julius Kim spoke to Griffin last week about St. John’s.

Asked about how Chris Mullin’s team appeals to his style, Griffin said that “I like the way they play… free ball. They like to go up and down and I like that. It seems like I can bring a lot to that team, but I’m also looking at other schools.”

Their message when they offered Alan has been this: “If I’m serious about them, they’ll be serious about me. And how I can help them out a lot of the offensive end and defensively.”

Griffin, who averaged eight points per game in Nike EYBL play with the NY Rens last season, would add a dose of smart play and crafty scoring inside the arc. His length could be effective on the wing, as well.

How will his recruiting end up? St. John’s has two scholarships and chances for playing time next season. Will the Johnnies and Alan Griffin have the recruiting connection?
