After picking up seven Big East weekly honor nods — and exploding during St. John’s wins over Duke, Villanova and Marquette — Shamorie Ponds earns a well-deserved spot on the five player 2018 Big East First Team, the league announced today.
From the Big East’s release:
St. John’s Ponds garnered All-Big East First Team accolades after being named to the Big East All-Freshman Team last season. The only sophomore on the first team, the guard led the Big East in scoring and steals in all games. He averaged 21.6 points and 2.5 steals. In league games, Ponds was second to Butler’s Martin in scoring with a 21.9 mark.
Ponds also averaged 5 assists per game, playing 37 minutes per contest.
No other St. John’s players made the First or Second teams. Other awards, such as Most Improved Player, Defensive Player of the Year, Coach of the Year and Player of the Year will be announced on Wednesday afternoon.
The league’s Player of the Year will be picked from the all-Big East team; there are three unanimous selections, and it is expected that one of those players will be Player of the Year. The asterisk (*) denotes an unanimous selection.
