Shamorie Ponds makes Big East honor roll; poll update

The Johnnies are nowhere to be seen in the AP poll

Wendell Cruz

The good news is that after a 1-1 week where St. John’s defeated Creighton and fell on the road to Butler, one of the Red Storm players received a weekly honor.

The bad news is that the AP Poll voters have found the Johnnies’ three losses wanting, and the Red Storm have received no votes, dropping out of the Also Receiving Votes category.

The Big East has Marquette ranked #12, Villanova at #18, and a bunch of SEC, Big 12 and Big Ten teams. And also...Hofstra received a vote.

But Shamorie Ponds, the talented 6’1” guard, shook off back problems to average 21 points, 3.5 assists and 2.5 steals in the Red Storm’s two games.

Ponds is a two-time Big East Player of the Week this season.

The Player of the Week is Marquette’s Sam Hauser and the Freshman of the week is his little brother, Joey Hauser.

The Big East Honorees:

Kamar Baldwin (guard, Butler) JR

Paul Reed (forward, DePaul) SO

Alpha Diallo (guard, Providence) JR

Shamorie Ponds (guard, St. John’s) JR

Phil Booth (guard, Villanova) SR
