Shamorie Ponds has earned another Big East weekly award — but not the player of the week, which went to the likely rival for Player of the Year, despite the head-to-head numbers last week.
Still, the intangibles of leadership loom large when one player beats the best team in the conference, while the other team gets blown out at home by the team at the bottom of the standings. Such is life.
Ponds averaged 24 points this week and 6.5 rebounds per game. He also had three turnovers in 78 minutes of action and five total assists. (He did shoot 1/7 from beyond the arc in the two games.)
Big East Player of the Week
Markus Howard, Marquette, G, Jr. – from the Big East’s release: “Howard scored a game-high 38 points to lead Marquette to a 66-65 win over first-place Villanova and averaged 27.5 points in a 1-1 week for the Golden Eagles. Howard has won Player of the Week honors six times this season.”
Big East Freshman of the Week
Mac McClung, Georgetown, G, Fr. – From the Big East’s release: “McClung takes Freshman of the Week honors for the second time this year after averaging 17.0 points, 5.0 rebounds and 3.5 assists in a 1-1 week. For the season, McClung leads all league freshmen in scoring with a 13.6 average”.
