The Dominican Basketball Federation has announced the roster selected to represent the country at the 2019 Pan-American Games in Lima, Peru. The roster of 18 includes several D1 players, including St. John’s junior LJ Figueroa.
Figueroa, who is also expecting an invite to the Summer Olympics with the national team, will have the opportunity to have a unique summer. While the rest of his St. John’s teammates go about their regular offseason, his time with the national team with provide him with international exposure and unique, professional experience.
Figueroa enters the summer having tested the transfer market immediately after his sophomore year at St. John’s. However, with the departure of Shamorie Ponds, he’s set to take on a much bigger role on the team under new head coach, Mike Anderson.
The six-foot-eight wing averaged 14.4 points per game last year on 51.3% shooting for the Johnnies. On the national team, he will be joined by Brandone Francis (Texas Tech) and Marques Townes (Loyola), among others.
The Pan-American Games will take play from July 31st to August 4th at the Eduardo Dibos Coliseum in Lima, Peru. The Dominican Republic is part of Group B, alongside Mexico, Argentina and Uruguay, in which they’re the favorites.
Mustapha Heron is set to represent the United States in Group A, which also includes the Virgin Islands and Venezuela.
