Some things to know going into tonight’s game...
UConn, Friday’s opponent for the Big East opener, will be rescheduled, since the Huskies are on pause after a COVID positive test within their program. St. John’s gets lucky; DePaul is also on pause, and were set to face Seton Hall, so the Hall and the Red Storm will matchup instead on Friday afternoon at 4:30 pm on the CBS Sports Network.
Julian Champagnie was named to the Big East Honor Roll this week.
St. John’s had a scholarship available and signed 6’10” forward Esahia Nyiwe, who sometimes go by Zay. He was a low-scoring, athletic, rebounding forward in junior college, and was slated to go to Texas Tech before the Red Raiders had a player surprisingly return. Nyiwe had enrolled at Tech over the summer; he will attend St. John’s after the end of the fall semester, and the Red Storm hope to get a waiver for his availability.
Will he play? He may be very raw, but clearly the team sees something in him.
Also: no Rasheem Dunn tonight for the fifth straight game.
