CBS Sports insider Jon Rothstein reported on Wednesday morning the expected schedule for the 2020 Big East-Big 12 challenge. Next season will be the second year of the ten-game challenge. Every team in the Big East will compete, except for Connecticut.
As for the Red Storm, they will travel to Lubbock next season for a bout with Texas Tech. They will face a Red Raiders team that is two years removed from an appearance in the NCAA Championship. Under their current head coach Chris Beard, Texas Tech has made Lubbock a very tough place to win a basketball game. Matthew Conner of Wreck’Em Red described next season’s Red Raiders team as, “...what’s already expected to be the most talented roster Beard has assembled.”
Some other matchups in the battle include Creighton at Kansas; Villanova at Texas; Baylor at Seton Hall; West Virginia at Georgetown; Oklahoma at Xavier; Providence at TCU; Oklahoma State at Marquette; DePaul at Iowa State; Kansas State at Butler.
The Big East will aim to repeat their success of last year, finishing 8-2 in this intra-conference challenge. St. John’s contributed their part, hanging on to beat the West Virginia Mountaineers at Madison Square Garden last season. The only two Big East teams to lose in the event last year were Seton Hall and Butler.
Looking ahead, we are starting to know a little more about St. John’s upcoming nonconference slate. The Red Storm will partake in the NIT Season Tip-Off alongside Arizona, Cincinnati, and Texas Tech. Since they will play in the Big East-Big 12 Battle, do not expect St. John’s to play the Red Raiders in the first round. Additionally, St. John’s will get two campus site games before playing the NIT Tip-Off in Brooklyn.
