2 Chainz has been one of the most successful rappers of the 2010s. Currently, he has 11.3 billion streams on Spotify and 1.8 billion views on YouTube. His 2013 debut album Based on a T.R.U. Story and his 2017 album Pretty Girls Like Trap Music achieved certified platinum status (1,000,000 or more sales), as the two albums collectively boasted a Rolodex of features from industry giants like Drake, Lil Wayne, Travis Scott, Nicki Minaj, and Quavo. Fans can expect to hear hit songs like “It’s a Vibe”, “4 AM”, and “I’m Different” throughout the night, as well as 2 Chainz’s feature verse on Chance the Rapper’s 2016 single “No Problem”, which won a Grammy award for Best Rap Performance.
The noticeable jump in headliner notoriety is a very welcome change for St. John’s students and fans alike. The school was criticized for choosing hip-hop and R&B artist BLXST (pronounced “blast”) to be the feature act of last year’s Red Storm Tip-Off event, as students complained about the Los Angeles-based artist’s lack of star power or recognizable set list. Now, 2 Chainz joins a long line of hip-hop acts like French Montana, Desiigner, Fivio Foreign, the late Juice WRLD and Mac Miller to headline the Red Storm’s premier pre-season event.
Tickets are available to students at 9 a.m. on the day of the event at the Carnesecca Arena ticket office, and at 4 p.m. for the general public if available. Doors open at 6:30 p.m.
