FOX Sports enters its first year of Big East basketball exclusivity in 2013-14.

Leaving the familiar for the unknown can be an intimidating decision.

The Big East Conference's new alliance with FOX Sports 1 - a fledgling network aimed at expanding the Fox Sports empire into college sports - has made some skeptical since the official announcement in March. The league's 34-year relationship with ESPN, the world's leading sports network, was a key contributor to the Big East's progression into the top basketball conference in the nation.

As the Big East transitions from that dependable reliance to one with a two month-old network in its infancy stage, there is a noticeable combination of excitement and reluctance among all with a stake.

But that's what they will do this season, as FOX Sports' lucrative deal with the Big East will result in over a hundred of the league's games televised on FS1 in 2013-14. Bringing aboard the rambunctious Gus Johnson and the lovable Bill Raftery was a strategically smart move to develop the network's brand, yet there is still much to prove.

Needing to prove sustainable quality will be an evident trend around Big East basketball this year. Not only is FOX in a position of minimal margin for error, but also is the conference itself. After breaking away from the revenues (and heartache) of football-focused institutions, the Big East has undergone a specialized rejuvenation.

As Johnson mentioned during his remarks at Big East Media Day on Wednesday, FOX Sports 1 will be dedicated and exciting. More importantly, it supposedly will not attempt to be in direct competition with ESPN.

But how is that possible? ESPN has televised the Big East since the league's inception in 1979. Now, FOX must prove that ESPN was simply an important component of the league's success, as opposed to a necessary one.

FOX will only be promoting the Big East, and it's interesting to know that you're their show. -Jay Wright

Coaches throughout the 10-team league have instilled confidence in FOX's ability to maintain the league's exposure, but it isn't the same.

"It's a different kind of confidence," said Villanova head coach Jay Wright on Wednesday. "You always had confidence that ESPN would get you exposure. The confidence you have in FOX is that they are investing in only our conference."

With its relationship with FOX, the Big East will be produced through a different lens. Many familiar faces who have analyzed Big East basketball for years - Jay Bilas and Digger Phelps, for example - won't be in the limelight for Villanova and Georgetown or Marquette and St. John's.

What the league has accomplished with the shift is exclusivity. FOX Sports 1 is the Big East's main network, and no one else's.

"When you're on ESPN, you know you're going to be on. But you also know that they're going to promote the ACC and the Big Ten," Wright continued. "FOX will only be promoting the Big East, and it's interesting to know that you're their show."

Wright, who has been at Villanova since 2001, is now the league's longest tenured head coach. After years of following the leads of Jim Boeheim, Rick Pitino and Jim Calhoun in coaches' meetings, Wright is now the standard. He knows the Big East better than anyone.

When asked if he is worried if his fan base will struggle to adjust to his Wildcats playing on FS1, Wright replied, "It's something we've worked on. In our society today, people tend to turn on the TV and hit 'Menu' to find 'Basketball' to see what games are listed. I mean, it's what I do."

While Fox Sports 1 may not be trying to compete with ESPN, no one can now compete with them for Big East exposure. The league has thrown all of its eggs in the basket, and seems to be confident in its decision.

The Big East is welcoming three new schools this year, all of which are viewing the move as a chance to grab the spotlight.

There is a lot of buzz surrounding the new Big East that will retain the core private Catholic schools (St. John's, Georgetown, Villanova, Providence, Seton Hall, DePaul, Marquette) while welcoming new blood from the Atlantic-10 and the Missouri Valley in Xavier, Butler and Creighton.

Some have questioned why these teams would leave situations that allowed them to achieve steady post season success and join a league that has such a higher level of competition. However, these programs do not harbor any uneasiness regarding the big switch; they're excited about being a part of the league.

Earlier this week, I had the chance to speak with the coaches of the first-year Big East members. One major takeaway was that they all shared the same feeling that the Big East offered their programs something big: exposure.

Chris Mack, head coach of the Xavier Musketeers, said "this league offers a ton of exposure for our program." He added that "playing on a stage like this can only be a good thing [for the Musketeers]."

Mack went on to say that "playing for your conference championship in the Mecca is an amazing opportunity for Xavier fans and players." Obviously, Xavier doesn't feel any regret about this move.

Fellow first-time Big East coach Greg McDermott, from Creighton, agreed with Mack's evaluation. McDermott said that "[Creighton's] fans have longed for this for awhile." McDermott went on to say that "with Fox [Sports] 1, it's very exciting for the program...there'll be a lot of new ideas with how [Creighton's] product is shown nationally."

St. John's head coach Steve Lavin said that "the new teams, obviously, will bring a lot of competition...Xavier, Butler and Creighton are great programs and now that they will be part of a bigger platform the nation will get to see."

It's clear that these new teams are being given a pretty big opportunity in the Big East to create national names for themselves. Now it will be up to them to capitalize on the opportunity, making the Big East a must-watch league that is focused on its core sport, basketball.

St. John's hopes to rise in the Big East after last year's NIT finish; the coaches pick them in the middle, waiting to see how the talent gels.

More notes from yesterday's Big East Media Day (also see NYC Buckets' Three Questions for Seton Hall and St. John's), where the theme was that the Red Storm had talent, but need to prove it on the court:

Dalí might not have conjured a more surrealistic vision than the layout of Wednesday’s Big East basketball media day, which pinned Creighton’s table next to Georgetown’s, Butler’s next to that of St. John’s, and Xavier’s across from Villanova’s, perhaps so they could all introduce each other.

[The dedication to basketball as a flagship sport] is what made the new Big East distinct, bonding a Creighton with a Georgetown. The conference’s 10 programs bleed basketball.

"It’s not like a ‘Sesame Street’ deal — which one doesn’t belong," St. John’s Coach Steve Lavin said. "You’ve got a tree, a bush, some seaweed and then a truck. It just didn’t fit. I think now we have a league that’s more similar."

As commissioner Val Ackerman said, "This is a return to the roots of the old and a season of new beginnings. That is what makes it so exciting. We're doing everything Dave Gavitt set out to do when he brought the league into being in 1979. We are going to make this basketball conference a force."

In terms of sheer numbers, the ACC has supplanted the old Big East at the top of the NCAA food chain. But the seven basketball-first Big East members that announced plans to form their own league last December -- St. John's, Seton Hall, Georgetown, Villanova, Marquette, Providence and DePaul -- and three prominent newcomers -- Creighton, Xavier and Butler -- have a rich history that commands immediate respect.

Seton Hall will come to Carnesecca Arena on January 23rd.

Kevin Willard loves Madison Square Garden, but is fine with having to play St. John's in Queens this year.

Last March, the Big East announced its new deal with the Garden to host its conference tournament at the World's Most Famous Arena until 2026. For many in the league, the venue is a familiar place and for others playing there is an exciting new venture.

For Seton Hall head coach Kevin Willard, retaining Madison Square Garden was as important a task as any the conference faced during the last few months - the first for the league's new management.

"It's one of the first things that the conference did. I played [at the Garden] and I used to run around as a ball boy for the Knicks back in the day when Coach Pitino was there," Willard said on Wednesday.

Like Willard, six other Big East coaches are familiar with the hallowed grounds on the corner of 7th Avenue and 34th Street come March. The Big East Tournament has been held there since 1983, and has sustained as one New York City's premier sporting events throughout the calendar year.

"There's nothing like the Big East Tournament on a Thursday or Friday, and there's nothing like Madison Square Garden," Willard continued. "The fact that we're going to be there for next 20 or 25 years is great for the conference and all of the kids who are going to come play here."

It's not discouraging. It's discouraging that we have to play against D`Angelo Harrison and JaKarr Sampson.
-Kevin Willard, on playing St. John's at Carnesecca Arena

For as important a tool the Garden can be for coaches in terms of attracting talent to their programs, it is always nice for Big East schools to have the opportunity to play there multiple times per year. The easiest way for teams like Seton Hall, who do not play in the country's premier nonconference tournaments, to do it is to play St. John's on the road.

But Willard's Pirates won't have that additional opportunity this season, as Seton Hall will be playing St. John's on the Red Storm's campus in Queens. Carnesecca Arena, which houses a capacity of about 6,000, is a much smaller, more intimate setting. But it just isn't the Garden.

"It's not discouraging. It's discouraging that we have to play against D`Angelo Harrison and JaKarr Sampson," Willard said. "Carnesecca is a great old-school type building. It's a tough place to play."

He's right, given the recently off-chance that St. John's teams attract sold-out atmospheres at Carnesecca Arena. When the arena, which is named for Lou Carnesecca's namesake, is full of electricity it can be loud and daunting for opponents.

Dating back to the Bobby Gonzalez era and beyond, Seton Hall has played at Carnesecca many times before. Last year, however, the Pirates played St. John's at the Garden.

"No matter what you've still got to play the game," Willard said. "The only thing is we don't get to stay in the city and get a great night out here."

The Pirates were picked eighth in the Big East preseason coaches' poll, announced on Wednesday at the conference's annual media day. Willard is entering his fourth season at the helm for Seton Hall, where he has accumulated a 49-48 overall record.
