Earlier this month, there were reports that Italian club Montepaschi Siena had signed 6'9" former St. John's forward Justin Burrell after a very good season with Chalons-Reins, where he signed last summer.
But European rules (link in .IT) nixed the move for the power forward; Siena already had three American players (including former Missouri star Kim English) under contract.
Have no worries about Justin's European adventure! The forward has landed with an A-level club, returning to France with Cholet (link in .FR).
Cholet finished in a three-way tie for tenth in the Pro A League last season in France, but had been in the top four of their 16-team league in the previous three seasons. Cholet's leading rebounder last season was Rudy Gobert, who was drafted by the Utah Jazz in the late stages of the first round of the NBA Draft. Cholet has also been the home of NBA wing/ guard Rodrigue Beaubois.
Burrell had a very strong season in the post for Chalons-Reims, shooting 62% from the field. He tallied 12.7 points per game with 7.3 rebounds, which was second on the team in scoring and first in the squad in total rebounds. Cholet finished third in the Pro B League and were runners-up in the league playoffs.
The Cholet season begins in October.
