Big East All-Rookie honors for Obekpa, Sampson

The Red Storm's two essential rookies are honored by the league.

As expected, JaKarr Sampson - who won Big East Rookie of the Week seven times and is expected to be named Rookie of the Year tomorrow, and center Chris Obekpa, who won Big East Rookie of the Week in January, have been named to the Big East's All-Rookie team. Sampson was the league's top freshman scorer at 14.9 points per game on the season; Obekpa led the league with 4.1 blocks per game.

Joining them on the All-Rookie squad are Pitt's Steven Adams, Villanova's Ryan Arcidiacono, UConn's Omar Calhoun, and Georgetown's D`Vauntes Smith-Rivera.

In Big East play, Obekpa blocked 3.3 shots per game and altered others; the Red Storm had the second best defense inside the arc in league play, allowing 43.7% shooting inside the three-point line and blocking just under 16% of opponent two-pointers - second best in the league. Obekpa is a huge factor anchoring the defense.

Sampson was the most consistent scorer on the Red Storm in league play, scoring 12 or more points in 16 of his 18 games, averaging 15 points per game in league play. In the last four, with D`Angelo Harrison (not named to any all-Big East teams) struggling, he averaged 16.3 points per game. The bouncy 6'8" forward also added 6 rebounds and a steal per game, shooting 43% from the field - all on two-pointers.

Despite his suspension, Harrison - who averaged 15.3 points and 4.3 rebounds per game in Big East play - was not voted to any Big East All-League teams. He was voted to the preseason Big East second team in October.
