Game ball: Chris Obekpa leads St. John's to victory over N.J.I.T.

Obekpa posts career highs in rebounding and points.

Maybe it's the shorts, but whatever Chris Obekpa did this summer is working. Obekpa scored 13 points, grabbed 13 rebounds, swatted 4 shots, and led St. John's to its first victory of the season. The N.J.I.T. big men were outmatched and could not handle the center from Nigeria.

On the defensive side of ball Obekpa did his best Dikembe Mutombo impersonation. He blocked shots and made things difficult for the N.J.I.T. penetrators. The Highlanders only managed to shoot 28 percent from the field and had issues finishing at the rim all night.

On the offensive side of the ball, Obekpa found easy points for himself in transition. He beat the N.J.I.T. bigs down the floor and got himself high percentage shots at the rim. He also threw a couple of pretty outlet passes that led to easy baskets down the floor. Obekpa's free throw shooting even looked better tonight as he knocked down 3/5 from the line.

Obviously N.J.I.T.is not a premier team, but it is nice to see the him take advantage of a lesser opponent. He had his fingerprints all over this game tonight and earned the game ball.

Next up for St. John's is a game against Franklin Pierce on Monday night at 7 PM at Carnesecca.
