Men's Soccer opens 2013 with a win over NJIT, loss to Virginia

While the ladies started 2013 off with an impressive 4-0-0 start, the men started their season as the No. 19 team in the country, and faced another top-25 on the road.

#19 St. John's 2, NJIT 1

The No. 19 Red Storm opened the season on Friday (Aug. 31) at home with a 2-1 win over visiting NJIT, with senior Jimmy Mulligan scoring the go-ahead goal in the 77th minute.

St. John's opened the scoring when sophomore Sean Sepe scored after getting a feed from Jamie Thomas after Thomas beat a NJIT defender. Thomas sent a pass into the box to feed Sepe, who easily tucked in his first collegiate goal.

The Highlanders answered with a goal of their own after a loose ball was picked up by Philipp Hannemann, who sent it ahead to Franco Gamero, who beat Red Storm goalkeeper Rafael Diaz (five saves) to tie it at 1.

#20 Virginia 2, #19 St. John's 0

The Red Storm took to the road for the second game of their season, taking on another top-20 team in Virginia.

The Cavaliers (1-1-0), were able to hold the Red Storm scoreless, taking the contest, 2-0. Virgina were paced by Jordan Allen, who had a goal and an assist, and goalkeeper Jeff Gal, who made one save to preserve the shutout.

For the Red Storm, Diaz made two stops, including a penalty kick in the second half.

The Red Storm return to action and opens a four-game homestand with an 8 p.m. start on Sept. 6 against No. 8 Akron.
